How do I create an online store?

I get this question all the time. It would take hours to explain all the possibilities ranging from a hosted store with some easy store builder software and templates to having a programmer write you a customer solution that is hosted on your own dedicated server. Since we don't have hours, let's see if we can get at least point you in the right direction.

I firmly believe in walking before you run. If you have no technical background at all and you don't know your HTML TDs from TRs then I highly recommend you start out with a hosted solution. In fact, even if you have some technical knowledge you should consider going with a hosted solution. You can always move up to more advanced solutions after you are more comfortable with the technical aspects of your store.

The solution we started with back in 1999 was a Yahoo Store. Their program has now evolved into the Yahoo Merchant Solutions but it still offers the same great features and the ability to get a professional looking store online quickly. You can get started for as little as $30/month. If that cost concerns you then you should reconsider the path you are about to embark on. You will need to invest some money to get your store online and you need to think in terms of ROI (Return on investment).
